Tuk Tuk, Glasgow

Date night in January took us to the newly opened Tuk Tuk restaurant on Sauchiehall Street. Their flagship restaurant opened in Edinburgh in 2012 and had been recommended to me more than once. When I heard they were bringing the goods to the West I was pretty excited. They serve small plates of Indian street food, “inspired by the food hawkers of India.”  Here is a small excerpt from their website to get a feel for their ethos:
ly prepared food of the people and represents the tastes of India today. We pride ourselves on being the pioneer of Indian street food culture and delivering exceptional customer service. Using fresh ingredients and authentic spices we have a selection of delicious dishes for everyone. Our philosophy is all about experiencing and sharing good food.”

Gordon Lane, 9 Gordon St, Glasgow, G1 3PL

Ramen Dayo is a new Japanese ramen bar and restaurant.   It currently resides in the former Laneways location down Gordon Lane. They’ve given the place a cosmetic update, with the only remaining reminder of Laneways being that red strip curtain at the back. The casual old-school-desk style seating has been replaced with small wooden sheltered stools and tables. And there are lanterns a-plenty.

Picnic Cafe – www.picnic-cafe.co.uk

I stopped by Picnic Cafe with a fellow vegan friend for lunch, the day after our office Christmas party. I’m not vegan myself, but as a massive fan of generally all the foods, I’m always open to checking out new spots. As far as I’m aware, Picnic is a one of a kind in the city centre. They are a 100% vegan cafe, whereas I believe all other vegan spots in town are also vegetarian/otherwise. So vegans – here is a safe haven. It’s sitting on Ingram Street, just along from Spitfire Espresso (which you may as well pop into if you’re in the neighbourhood…). #caffeineplug

Visiting Copenhagen in December

Of all the cities I have visited so far, visiting Copenhagen was a very special trip. This may have been because it was during the festive season. Copenhagen in December is just adorable. Either way, if you’re considering a trip to Denmark over Winter, don’t let the cold put you off. The wind blew hard and the rain regularly drizzled, but it didn’t dampen our Christmas spirits.  This city is just wonderful.

I visited Copenhagen last December, and with Christmas rolling around again out of nowhere, I really just wanted to reminisce.  This city deserves some praise, and hopefully, this post will give you some tips if you’re planning on visiting anytime soon. Everywhere mentioned is in the city centre, or just outside of it. So let’s talk about visiting Copenhagen.

With a date night to mark a celebration, only one thing will do – steak. So as I slowly make my way around Glasgow’s never-ending food scene, I decided we should visit one of the classic spots for a steak.  Butchershop Bar & Grill on Sauchiehall Street.  Neither of us had ever been so excitement levels were high.

My trip to Cafe Strange Brew was long overdue.  But I am a city centre girl, so hopefully the distance makes it a little more forgivable. I can’t quite remember where I heard about the Cafe, but it was fresh in my mind after their collaboration with El Perro Negro in July. They’re always cropping up on Glasgow blogs so I assume I read about it somewhere else too…

My third visit to Topolabamba and still as impressive as ever. I guess you could describe it as Mexican-style tapas, with some larger dishes for the hungrier customer.  We visited the restaurant around 8.30pm on a Saturday and only waited around 20-25 minutes for a table (despite being told it would be 45).  Having the table wait cut in half was definitely a good start.

So I don’t normally check out new chain restaurants in Glasgow, purely because I like supporting local restaurants and kitchens. But between the social media praise and the real-life recommendations, I really wanted to pay this place a visit.  So June’s date night took us to a Saturday evening booking around 7pm to Smoke BBQ on West Regent Street.

Anyone who knows Papercup Coffee will probably be familiar with their Great Western Road location – one which I have never actually visited. So when I saw they were opening a city centre location in May, the prospect of another new regular coffee haunt in my ‘hood was exciting.  I finally popped in last week to sample their coffee and, of course, their cakes.

I can’t explain how much I love visiting street-style food markets for dinner (or any meal to be fair but I’ve only ever gone to this kinda thing at night!).  Between the choice of food and the almost-guaranteed great atmosphere there’s just no going wrong.  So today I’m posting some snaps from Dinerama in Shoreditch.  Dinerama is one of the four food markets under the Streat Feast London umbrella.  Dinerama is in Shoreditch, Hawker House in Southwark, Model Market in Lewisham and Dalston Yard in Dalston.
